Résumé

Cet article examine certaines des critiques formulées à l’encontre de l’amélioration des capacités cognitives par l’utilisation d’agents pharmacologiques, ainsi que certains moyens de les contrer. L’argument supposera l’appareil institutionnel d’une démocratie libérale de production capitaliste. Si chacun de ces facteurs (libéralisme, démocratie et capitalisme) admet différentes interprétations, l’argument ne joue pas sur leur spécification. Une conclusion importante sera que l’incertitude quant aux conséquences de l’amélioration des capacités cognitives sur la santé doit également être prise en compte dans l’équation. Si son utilisation ne présente aucun danger, il n’y a aucune raison d’en restreindre l’accès. Mais si elle cause un préjudice ou est susceptible de causer un préjudice, cette considération peut changer. En règle générale, plus l’amélioration est dangereuse ou plus les conséquences sur la santé sont incertaines, mieux vaut contrôler et restreindre l’accès. Toutefois, s’il n’a pas de conséquences graves pour la santé, il n’y aurait aucune raison, d’un point de vue libéral, de restreindre son utilisation

PhD in Political and Moral Philosophy, Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen, Alemania, 2001. Licenciado enFilosofía, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, 1994. Sus áreas de especialización son filosofía política,filosofía moral y ética, con especial énfasis en teorías igualitarias, multiculturalismo, teorías liberales,ética de los animales, ética del medioambiente y teorías de justicia internacional. Junto al desarrollo denumerosos proyectos de investigación se ha desempeñado como investigador y profesor visitante delCNRS en la Universidad de Oxford y en la Universidad de Tübingen, entre otros. Es miembro del ResearchCentre for Political Philosophy de la Universidad Tübingen y del Interdepartmental Centre for Ethics in theSciences and Humanities de la misma Universidad
